Part of The Ashwood Practice Adult Services
The group has a slowly changing membership, up to a maximum of eight people. Following some individual sessions with the group conductor, the new members will join the group when a suitable vacancy occurs; the decision for a member to leave is made with the help of the group.
Groups are confidential and members are asked not to discuss other peoples' issues outside the group.
Group sessions consist of a free floating discussion with no formal agenda. Members are encouraged to bring their concerns and to respond as honestly as possible. The interaction with others in the group often echoes the individual’s experience outside the group; the recognition of recurring patterns of behaving and relating can be the first step towards change, first within the group and then outside.
Group Psychotherapy is an established form of therapy, offering people another context in which to explore and resolve their difficulties and work towards more satisfying ways of relating.
Many of the problems encountered by an individual in their personal life and at work have their source not only in the dynamics of the current situation, but also in the groups in which they grew up, including the family, school, and friendship groups.
The mutual sharing of concerns with others in a group is beneficial in a number of ways: - You can clarify your difficulties through discussion with others and express pent up feelings, which tend to surround and complicate your problems, in an accepting atmosphere. You may gain encouragement from discovering that others are struggling with similar difficulties and are making progress with them. Your self-esteem can improve as you find that you can be helpful or and appreciated by others in the group. The opportunity to speak seriously and honestly with others can improve your self-confidence.
Groups meet each week for an hour and a half and members are expected to attend all sessions.
Group therapy is a long term therapy and members should expect to remain in the group for at least six months, however, to gain significant benefit, one to two years may be more helpful.
